Immigrant Involved in Fatal Crash Granted Residency in Canada

A Pakistani immigrant, Yasir Baig, previously ordered deported for causing a fatal five-vehicle crash in Mississauga, Ont., has won a chance to remain in Canada after a Federal Court review. The January 2018 accident resulted in one death and several injuries, and Baig fled the scene but later turned himself in. While he pled guilty to dangerous driving causing death, the court found the Immigration Appeal Division erred in assessing his rehabilitation potential and the impact on his Canadian citizen children. Baig, a permanent resident since 2008, argued for humanitarian relief based on his family situation and low risk of reoffending, which the IAD initially rejected.
