Opinion: Reinvest tobacco settlement cash to keep more Albertans alive

An Ontario Superior Court judge has approved a $32.5 billion settlement for three major tobacco companies to compensate provinces and ex-smokers, including New Brunswick. Alberta’s successful tobacco-reduction strategy has led to record-low smoking rates, but more work is needed to meet national goals and address youth vaping. The provincial government’s new Tobacco and Vaping Reduction Strategy requires increased funding to continue driving down tobacco use and nicotine addiction.
