Former justice secretary David Gauke suggests that moving thousands of prisoners to open prisons could help alleviate overcrowding and improve rehabilitation efforts in the UK. Currently, only a small percentage of inmates are housed in category D jails, which allow for prisoners to work and spend time outside the prison walls. Gauke believes that this approach, similar to the system in Spain, could save money, reduce reoffending rates, and help prisoners reintegrate into society successfully.

Prisons in crisis as 74 attacks take place every day behind bars
New figures show that there are 74 assaults per day in jails in England and Wales, with a total of 26,912 assault incidents in 2023, including 3,205 serious assaults. Nearly 10,000 assaults were on staff, with 825 deemed serious. The most violent prison was HMP Wandsworth, where over half of the 1,044 total assaults were on staff. Full Article
