Oarfish keep washing ashore in California. Folklore suggests that could be a bad omen

Ph.D. candidate Alison Laferriere from Scripps Oceanography found an oarfish washed up on Grandview Beach in Encinitas, Calif., marking the third oarfish sighting in Southern California since August. Oarfish typically live at depths of 300 to 3,000 feet and are rarely seen on the surface. The recent strandings may be due to changes in ocean conditions and increased oarfish numbers in the area. While oarfish are associated with Japanese folklore linking them to earthquakes, scientific studies have not found a significant relationship between oarfish sightings and seismic activity.
