North Carolina’s governor has vetoed a GOP bill that would weaken his successor and other Democrats

Governor Roy Cooper vetoed legislation that would strip powers from incoming Democratic officials, including Governor-elect Josh Stein, weakening their authority and shifting appointments to Republican control. The bill, rushed through by the GOP, includes Hurricane Helene relief funds but has been criticized for its partisan power grabs and lack of substantial aid. The legislation, now facing a potential override attempt, also limits the governor’s appointments, weakens the attorney general’s authority, and hinders the superintendent of public instruction, among other changes.
