Federal prosecutors in the US will not seek the death sentence for Joaquin Guzman Lopez if he is found guilty at trial, court documents show.

Federal prosecutors in the US announced they will not pursue the death penalty against Joaquin Guzman Lopez, son of drug lord “El Chapo,” if convicted of drug trafficking and money laundering charges. Guzman Lopez, indicted alongside his brothers known as the “Chapitos,” has pleaded not guilty to the charges, which include one that could carry the death penalty. His lawyer expressed satisfaction with the decision, and his brother Ovidio is expected to plead guilty to related charges in July.
