NIH cuts put medical research at risk, scientists say, raising concerns at UC and elsewhere

The Trump administration’s drastic cut to NIH funding, set to take effect Monday, has caused alarm among UC leaders and medical researchers, who fear it will jeopardize America’s research preeminence. The NIH will slash indirect funding, leading to a cap of 15% on grants, down from rates as high as 64% at UC San Francisco. While the White House defends the move as a way to reduce administrative costs, UC officials are concerned about the impact on their medical research efforts.
