Nigerian court rules UK to pay £420m for 1949 coal mine deaths
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A Nigerian court has ordered the UK to pay £420m to families of 21 miners killed by colonial police during a 1949 protest at the Iva Valley Coal Mine. Justice Anthony Onovo held Britain liable for the incident, stating a formal apology is also required. The court noted that the miners were unarmed and simply seeking better working conditions. This ruling is seen as a step towards historical accountability for colonial-era violations.
