Ashburton is no longer known as “turtle town” as the council ends permanent 30kph school speed zones, now only enforced during drop-off and pick-up times. Resident Grant McFaul expressed relief at the change, following a Government rule adjustment in 2022 aimed at enhancing road safety. The variable speed limits will be implemented in time for the new school year, with NZ Transport Agency approving new signs indicating the limited hours of the 30kph zones.

A crash between two cars and multiple cattle on State Highway 1 near Dunedin has led to traffic being reduced to one lane as emergency services clean up the scene.
