A rapidly growing wildfire broke out north of Los Angeles near Castaic Lake, devouring hillsides and spreading to cover over 9,400 acres in just a few hours, prompting evacuations for 31,000 people. The United States Forest Service closed the entire 700,000-acre park in the San Gabriel Mountains. Meanwhile, two major fires in the metropolitan area were getting under control after burning an area nearly the size of Washington, DC, killing 28 people and causing extensive damage.
