In the past decade, British theater director Nadia Fall has observed the polarizing debate surrounding Shamima Begum and online radicalization, inspiring her to create the film “Brides,” loosely based on the teenage girls who joined Islamic State fighters in Syria. The movie follows two fictional Muslim teenagers facing racism and abuse at home, who are lured to Syria by false promises of respect. Despite the divisive nature of the subject, Fall believes the film’s message of empathy and understanding is essential in combating the forces that drive young people towards extremism.
