A new study published in JAMA Neurology debunks “an alleged ‘mystery’ neurological illness” that emerged in New Brunswick six years ago.
The research examined 25 cases of patients diagnosed with neurological syndrome of unknown cause (NSUC), finding no support for this diagnosis. Instead, all patients were identified with known conditions like neurodegenerative diseases and traumatic brain injury, with the study concluding a probability of less than .001 for a new disease. The findings emphasize the importance of independent evaluations and highlight the need to address public concern despite the rejection of a mystery illness by provincial investigations.
