Lashaunda Waswa, the youngest band councillor of Neskantaga First Nation, is advocating for the protection of her community’s land and resources by leading a snowmobile trip to a mining exploration camp in the Ring of Fire, where they served a cease-and-desist letter to halt activities. Chief Gary Quisses emphasized that the community never consented to the exploration, which threatens ancestral lands. Meanwhile, Ontario’s government plans to expedite approvals for projects in the area, raising concerns among First Nations about consultation and environmental impacts. PTX Metals Inc. claims to have received all necessary permits and is committed to working collaboratively with local communities.
