A Dunedin woman, 48-year-old Katrina (Kate) Anne Aynsley, died from an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound during a hunting trip on June 3, 2023, as determined by Coroner Mary-Ann Borrowdale. The incident occurred while she was alone in steep, slippery terrain of the Blue Mountains Conservation Area when her rifle discharged, striking her head. Aynsley, an experienced hunter, was out hunting fallow deer with her fiancé, Gregory Fagg, at the time. The coroner classified the tragedy as “a terrible accident” in a hazardous sport.
