Germany has acknowledged early 1900s genocide of Herero and Nama people, but reparations remain elusive.
Namibia commemorated its first Genocide Remembrance Day for the Herero and Nama people, killed by German colonisers between 1904 and 1908, with calls for reparations from President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. Although Germany acknowledged the genocide in 2021, reparations discussions have been stalled since 2013, with Germany offering development aid instead. Activists stress that any resolution must include reparations and return of land currently owned by German settlers.
