Mohaddeseh Fallahat, a grieving mother, recounted the heartbreaking last moments with her two children who were killed in a US Tomahawk missile strike on a girls’ school in Iran. Speaking at the UN Human Rights Council, she shared the pain of losing her children in the attack that claimed over 170 lives, mostly schoolgirls. Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, condemned the attack as deliberate and intentional, accusing the US and Israel of committing humanitarian crimes with impunity. The UN special rapporteur on the right to education highlighted that more than 600 schools have been destroyed in Iran by US-Israeli attacks, with at least 230 children and teachers killed.

Why It Matters

The tragic story of Mohaddeseh Fallahat sheds light on the devastating human cost of conflict, particularly the impact on innocent children and families. The deliberate targeting of schools and education facilities in Iran raises concerns about violations of international law and the protection of civilians during conflicts. The ongoing destruction of schools not only hinders access to education but also violates the basic rights of children to safety and security. This story underscores the urgent need for accountability and justice in addressing the consequences of military actions on civilians, especially vulnerable populations like schoolchildren.
