Katie Blue-Pugh was born with a major heart defect and underwent life-saving surgery at 10 years old, but may still need a heart transplant in the future. Heart defects are common, affecting one in every 100 live births, and groundbreaking research by MCRI and Gladstone Institutes aims to use AI and stem cell technology to find and treat babies before birth. Professor Enzo Porrello leads the initiative, “Decoding Broken Hearts,” to develop personalized treatments and avoid the need for transplantation.
