Scientists have discovered mummified remains of cheetahs in northern Saudi Arabia, dating from 130 to over 1,800 years old, including seven mummies and 54 other bones near Arar. This unprecedented find offers insights into the evolutionary history and extinction of cheetahs in the region. The dry conditions of the caves contributed to the mummification process, although the reasons for the concentration of cheetahs there remain unclear. Cheetahs have significantly diminished their range due to habitat loss and hunting.
