Morocco’s Atlantic gambit: linking restive Sahel to ocean

A Moroccan project, the “Atlantic Initiative,” aims to establish a trade corridor linking the Sahel to the Atlantic, promising ocean access for Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger via a $1.3 billion port in disputed Western Sahara. Despite geopolitical challenges and regional instability, Morocco seeks to enhance economic ties while asserting control over Western Sahara and positioning itself as a key partner in the Sahel amidst rising security threats.
