In a historic decision, female athletes will outnumber male athletes at the 2028 Los Angeles summer Olympics, with the women’s soccer tournament expanding to 16 teams compared to the men’s 12 teams. This move by the International Olympic Committee helps achieve a close to equal gender representation of 50.7% women and 49.3% men, with additional sports like cricket and flag football being added to the program. The decision marks a significant milestone for gender equality in sports and was made under the leadership of Kirsty Coventry, the first female president-elect of the IOC.
