MOL orders ammonia dual-fuel newcastlemaxes

Japanese shipping company Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) has expanded its orderbook by securing a deal for four newcastlemax bulk carriers from CSSC Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding, with delivery scheduled for 2027 and 2028. These new vessels, costing $10m more than previous orders, will be powered by ammonia dual-fuel units instead of LNG dual-fuel engines. MOL’s focus on ammonia-fuelled ships has led to partnerships with Mitsui & Co and Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, resulting in 14 dual-fuel newcastlemax newbuilding projects across Chinese and Japanese shipyards, joining other industry players in pursuing eco-friendly vessel designs.
