MOL details trial of laser to remove rust and coatings

Japan’s largest shipowner, MOL, partnered with Tsuneishi Shipbuilding and Furukawa Electric to trial a laser system for rust and coating removal on a bulk carrier during dry dock, aiming to reduce environmental impact and improve occupational health by minimizing waste, dust, and noise. By replacing sandblasting with laser blasting, MOL plans to make this method more common and cost-effective, utilizing the system’s robot to save on labor costs.
