Nine members of Premier Danielle Smith’s United Conservative Party (UCP) face recall petitions that could jeopardize the party’s majority in the Alberta legislature. Elections Alberta has approved petitions for six additional UCP MLA recalls, including cabinet ministers, alongside previously approved petitions targeting Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides, backbencher Nolan Dyck, and deputy Speaker Angela Pitt. Petitioners cite various grievances, such as perceived failures to support public education and concerns over constituent representation. If all nine MLAs are recalled, the UCP would lose its majority in the 87-member house, where they currently hold 47 seats against 38 for the Opposition NDP.
