Mexico’s ex-public security chief, Genaro Garcia Luna, has been sentenced to 38 years in prison for accepting millions in bribes from the Sinaloa cartel. He was convicted by a New York jury for providing intelligence and safe passage for drugs in exchange for money while serving as Mexico’s top security official from 2006 to 2012. Prosecutors sought a life sentence, but his lawyers argued for a maximum of 20 years behind bars.
