Mexican authorities have captured Omar Oswaldo Torres, the leader of a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel, in a raid in Culiacan, resulting in the deaths of 11 individuals. The Mexican Navy reported that their personnel were attacked during the operation, leading to the casualties. Torres, also known as “El Patas”, heads the Los Mayos faction, which has been engaged in a feud with another faction within the cartel.

Why It Matters

The capture of Omar Oswaldo Torres is a significant development in the ongoing battle against drug cartels in Mexico. This raid is part of a larger effort by Latin American governments to combat organized crime, with a focus on delivering tangible results to appease US President Donald Trump. The use of militarized tactics to target cartel leaders like Torres raises questions about the long-term efficacy of such strategies and their impact on violence and criminal activities in the region.
