Montreal Mayor and STM Address Transit Violence Concerns
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Montreal transit officials and Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada are addressing safety concerns amid rising transit-related assaults, which have doubled in major Canadian cities since 2016. Despite a slight decline in violent crime rates in 2024, they remain above a decade ago, prompting a commitment to increase Metro constables and tackle homelessness and drug issues. The STM has revived a controversial loitering policy and implemented safety measures, including a text service for non-urgent issues and increased visibility of staff. With over 2,500 cameras and 180 special constables, the STM aims to enhance safety for both employees and customers.
