Union Defence minister Rajnath Singh on Monday celebrated 40 years of operation Meghdoot at Siachen glacier in Ladakh stating that the soldiers are no less than deities as they protect the nation from its enemies.Singh stated that Siachen is not an ordinary piece of land but a sacred temple that exemplifies the national determination and is the capital of valour and courage of the nation. “Siachen represents our national determination. On 13th April operation Meghdoot completed 40 years and the whole country is proud of this successful operation and it is the golden chapter of India’s glory,” said Singh, while addressing the forces at Siachen in Ladakh. He stated that bravery of armed forces at Siachen is prominent and one of the most important parts of India’s national security history. The Siachen glacier at the height of around 20,000 feet in the Karakoram range is the highest battlefield in the world where armed forces have to fight both the enemy and the frost bites due to harsh climate. The defence minister, accompanied by Army Chief Gen Manoj Pande, reviewed the overall security situation in the region

“Delhi is our political capital, Mumbai is the financial capital, Bangalore is our technology capital and Siachen is the capital of our valour and courage,” said Singh.

The minister said that soldiers are family members of each and every household of the country and the nation feels safe because the forces are alert and steadfast along the borders. “India has a long border and despite some troubling news from its borders, the country lives happily and is on the path of progress. Our schools, hospitals, temples, masjids, shops and offices are doing their routine work , because of you people on the borders,” said Singh adding, “At this height amid harsh climate you are ready to fire at the enemy and also take a bullet on your chest. You are doing an unparalleled service to the nation.”Singh said that armed forces are the protectors of the nation as they are no less than the deities who protect people. “Your responsibility of protecting the nation makes you no less than a deity. Our citizens are able to celebrate festivals only because of your presence along the borders,” said Singh.

The minister urged the chiefs of army, airforce and navy to start the tradition of celebrating festivals with the armed forces a day ahead of all the important festivals of the country.

“Celebration of festivals with soldiers should become part of India’s culture and tradition. A day before important festivals, celebrations should be organised with soldiers posted at the heights of Kargil, deserts of Rajasthan and submarines in the seas. This will be a tribute of the nation to your priceless duty for the nation,” he added.
