Man who stole iconic portrait of Winston Churchill from hotel is jailed | World News

A man named Jeffrey Wood was sentenced to nearly two years in prison for stealing the famed “Roaring Lion” portrait of Sir Winston Churchill from the Fairmont Chateau Laurier hotel in Ottawa between Christmas 2021 and early January 2022. The portrait, which was later sold at auction and ended up in Rome, was recovered by Canadian police after being replaced with a fake, and Wood admitted to the crime to financially support his brother. The iconic portrait, captured by photographer Yousuf Karsh in 1941, was returned to the hotel in November 2022 and is now secured.
