A New Jersey jury convicted Rashid Ali Bynum of murder for the shooting of Eunice Dwumfour, the first Black councilwoman of Sayreville, on February 1, 2023. Bynum, who had a past connection to Dwumfour’s church and a lengthy criminal history, faces a sentencing of 30 years to life, scheduled for August 18. The 30-year-old councilwoman was found dead in her SUV, having won her seat in an upset election in November 2021, and was noted for her work in local nonprofits and community relations.
