Federated Farmers Arable group chair David Birkett warns that unless the issue of gas shortage for drying maize grain is resolved, the country may need to import maize next season. Maize grown in the North Island must be dried to 14% moisture level, but current facilities are struggling to meet this requirement. Importing maize would not be beneficial for farmers or the country as a whole.
