M23 rebels expand their control of Goma in eastern Congo

Rwanda-backed rebels captured Goma, Congo’s largest city, including the airport, prompting thousands to flee and overwhelming hospitals, despite government forces still controlling pockets of the city. The M23 rebel group, part of numerous armed groups in eastern Congo, seized control after a weeks-long advance, leading to calls for a ceasefire from Rwanda’s president and the East African Community, as Pope Francis urged an end to hostilities and protection of civilians. Rwanda denies supporting M23, accusing Congo of backing Hutu rebels, with analysts warning of challenges in securing a rebel withdrawal due to increased boldness and tensions in the region.
