Los Angeles district attorney George Gascon announced that his office will recommend that Lyle and Erik Menendez, who were convicted of murdering their parents in 1989 and sentenced to life in prison without parole in 1996, be resentenced to 50 years to life, making them eligible for parole. Gascon stated that he believes resentencing is appropriate under the law, despite opposition from some members of his office. Lyle and Erik Menendez have been behind bars for 34 years after admitting to shooting their father Jose Menendez, an entertainment executive, and mother Kitty Menendez at their Beverly Hills home.
