Hazel Dukes, the president of the New York State NAACP chapter and lifelong civil rights advocate, passed away at 92 in her NYC home surrounded by family. Through nearly five decades of leadership, she fought for voting rights, economic development, fair housing, and education, speaking out against police brutality and advocating for healthcare in underserved communities. Dukes was instrumental in paving the way for Black women in politics, supporting Shirley Chisholm’s presidential bid and influencing Joe Biden’s choice of a Black woman as his running mate.
