Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet criticized the Liberal government for canceling a parliamentary justice committee meeting intended to discuss an amendment that would eliminate religious defences in hate speech laws. The Bloc’s Rhéal Fortin was poised to propose this amendment, but concerns over backlash from certain groups led to the meeting’s cancellation, jeopardizing the bill’s progress. Blanchet urged the Liberals to reconvene the committee to address the amendment, emphasizing the political stakes involved. Opposition Conservatives oppose the amendment, framing it as an attack on religious freedom, while accusing the Liberals of stalling the justice agenda.
