Leaders of 56 nations at the Commonwealth Heads of Government summit in Samoa expressed grave concern over the global ocean emergency, issuing the historic Apia Commonwealth Ocean Declaration “One Resilient Common Future” to address rising temperatures and acidity, impacting reefs and mangroves. Pacific Island countries, like Samoa and Kiribati, are especially affected by sea level rise, with ambitious goals set to protect and restore marine ecosystems by 2030. Additionally, New Zealand and Australia are investing in the Pacific Resilience Facility to support disaster preparedness and climate change adaptation, emphasizing the need for Commonwealth countries to address the unique challenges faced by small island nations.
