Lea Melandri: ‘Love has been a veil’ for domestic violence
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Lea Melandri (1941) is an essayist, writer, and journalist. She is a prominent figure in Italian feminism. Her latest book, Love and Violence: The Vexatious Factors of Civilization (Albany: State University of New York Press, 2019), can be found at Lea’s Archive. Male domination has a unique characteristic compared to other forms of domination. Lea Melandri explains that male domination involves intimate aspects such as sexuality, motherhood, and family relationships. Men, being the children of women, encounter the body of the woman who gave birth to them at their most vulnerable and dependent moments. This power dynamic continues into their adult relationships, where women are often confined to the role of mother. This blurring of love and violence hinders awareness of sexism even today.

In her writings, Lea Melandri delves into the concept of “invisible violence” or “symbolic violence,” which involves the male representation of the world that women have internalized. The victim often speaks the same language as the aggressor, perpetuating power imbalances. The feminist movement of the 1970s aimed to uncover the political nature of personal experiences, such as sexuality and motherhood, challenging the traditional notion of these experiences as non-political and natural.

Melandri reflects on the term “patriarchy” and its role in shaping societal norms and power dynamics. She suggests that patriarchy is a worldview that has been internalized by both men and women, influencing behavior and relationships. Love, as a form of symbolic violence, plays a crucial role in perpetuating male domination and reinforcing gender roles. By questioning the concept of love as it relates to power and control, Melandri challenges traditional notions of masculinity and femininity.

Drawing on the work of Pierre Bourdieu, Melandri explores the intricacies of love as a subtle form of symbolic violence. She emphasizes the importance of understanding the complexities of love and its impact on power dynamics within relationships. Through her writings, Melandri encourages readers to critically examine the intersections of love, violence, and power in order to challenge patriarchal norms and promote gender equality.
