L.A. D.A. Hochman to fire Gascón’s police shootings prosecutor

Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. Nathan Hochman plans to terminate the contract of special prosecutor Lawrence Middleton, hired by George Gascón to reopen investigations into fatal police shootings. Middleton was brought on in 2021 to reconsider charges in cases declined by former Dist. Atty. Jackie Lacey, but tensions grew between Gascón and line prosecutors over his hiring and the amount of money spent on him. Middleton’s efforts to bring charges in high-profile cases, such as the killing of Christopher Deandre Mitchell by Torrance police, have faced challenges, with no trial date set and legal arguments ongoing.
