L.A. Archdiocese has spent $1.5 billion over molestation by priests

Clergy sex abuse scandals have resulted in the Los Angeles Archdiocese paying out over $1.5 billion in settlements to nearly 2,500 victims, due in part to a California law allowing more time to file lawsuits. Cardinal Roger Mahony’s mishandling of abuse cases and failure to address the issue led to a culture of secrecy and reassigning accused priests, resulting in hundreds of perpetrators within the Archdiocese.
