Kidd Carrig, a 16-year-old student with Down syndrome, plans to fully immerse himself in the Polar Plunge Chicago event at North Avenue Beach, aiming to go waist-deep in Lake Michigan waters. Leading the team “Kidd’s Krue,” which has raised $1 million for Special Olympics Illinois, Carrig and his family, along with friends from across the country, participate annually in the plunge, which attracts thousands of participants and celebrities, all in support of a great cause. The event serves as a joyous reunion where smiles, tears, and encouragement from Special Olympians make for a powerful and unforgettable experience, culminating in a celebratory gathering at Lawlor’s Bar in Mount Greenwood.
