The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has resigned due to a damning report implicating him in failing to alert authorities about serial abuser John Smyth QC’s abuse of children and young men. Despite facing pressure to step down, Mr Welby took personal and institutional responsibility for the Church of England’s historic safeguarding failures, expressing deep shame and a desire to prioritize the church’s best interests by stepping aside. Calls for his resignation included a petition with over 10,000 signatures and a senior bishop warning of the church’s credibility being at risk regarding safeguarding issues.
