A federal jury ordered the Chicago Board of Education to pay $750,000 to the family of a child who was beaten at a CPS school in September 2018 after being whipped with belts by a teacher’s friend. The lawsuit, filed by Asia Gaines, accused the child’s homeroom teacher, Kristen Haynes, of arranging the abuse at George W. Tilton Elementary School on Chicago’s West Side. The jury deliberated for over four hours before reaching the verdict.
