JSE Voluntary Carbon Market Sees First Trades Of Carbon Credits Eligible For The SA Carbon Tax

The JSE Ventures Voluntary Carbon Market, in partnership with Xpansiv, facilitated the first trades of carbon credits eligible as offsets against South Africa’s Carbon Tax, with 10,000 credits traded at $8.25 per credit, equivalent to 80% of the current tax rate. The market allows for buying and selling of carbon and renewable energy credits for compliance and voluntary programs, with the recent launch of International Renewable Energy Certificates to offset “scope two” emissions. This initiative aims to accelerate net-zero programs and meet compliance requirements, supporting South African companies in their sustainability goals and transition to net zero.
