Record-breaking snowfall disrupts daily life in northern Japan’s Hokkaido

Record-breaking snowfall hit Japan’s northern main island of Hokkaido, causing traffic disruptions, airport closures, and delayed deliveries. The heavy snowfall, especially in eastern regions like Obihiro and Kushiro, led to stalled vehicles and calls for help, while Sapporo’s snow festival proceeded without major issues. With up to 100cm of snow predicted in northwestern Japan and 50cm more in Hokkaido, highways and main roads were closed, train services suspended, and flights cancelled, impacting thousands of residents and visitors.
