Fallout continues after Japanese prime minister said use of force against Taiwan would be ‘survival threatening’ for Japan.
Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi sparked tensions with China by declaring that any Chinese aggression towards Taiwan would pose a “survival-threatening situation” for Japan. In response, Japan’s UN ambassador refuted China’s claims that Takaichi violated international norms, marking a significant shift in Japan’s traditionally cautious stance on Taiwan. This dispute has increased Takaichi’s popularity amid public discontent over China’s historical comparisons to Japan’s wartime actions. China condemned Takaichi’s remarks as erroneous and a challenge to the post-war international order.
