James Howells attempted to sue a council after his Bitcoin hard drive worth nearly £600m was mistakenly dumped in a landfill in Wales by his former partner in 2013. Despite narrowing the location of the hard drive to an area of 100,000 tonnes, the council argued that it had become their property and asked a High Court judge to dismiss the case, which was ruled to have “no realistic prospect” of succeeding at trial. Bitcoin, a form of cryptocurrency, is completely virtual and stored in a digital wallet, with Mr Howells having used it during the late noughties before forgetting about it when it was disposed of in the landfill.
