Italy’s highest appeals court has ordered the government to compensate a group of migrants stranded at sea in 2018 due to Matteo Salvini’s anti-migration policies. The Cassation court ruling overturned a previous decision and instructed the government to pay for damages inflicted on the migrants, with the case now returned to an ordinary court to determine the compensation amount. Salvini and Meloni criticized the decision, with Salvini calling it “absurd” and Meloni arguing that it unfairly burdens Italian taxpayers.
