The Cassation court ruling overturned a previous decision and instructed the government to pay for damages inflicted on the migrants, with the case now returned to an ordinary court to determine the compensation amount. Salvini and Meloni criticized the decision, with Salvini calling it “absurd” and Meloni arguing that it unfairly burdens Italian taxpayers.
