Italy’s government has approved a new bill aimed at curbing undocumented immigration, allowing authorities to impose a 30-day naval blockade on sea arrivals in cases of a serious threat to public order. The bill also includes stricter border surveillance and expands the list of convictions for which a foreigner can be expelled. If the bill is approved by parliament, it could revive Italy’s troubled “return hub” migrants centre in Albania. The measures come as migrant boat arrivals to Italy have decreased and the government aims to restrict rescue operations in the Central Mediterranean.
