Is the US supplying Mexican cartels with weapons?

Mexican Defence Minister Ricardo Trevilla Trejo revealed that 80% of weapons seized from cartels are smuggled from the US. The recent killing of a top drug lord, El Mencho, led to coordinated attacks by armed cartel members across Mexico. The cartels bypass Mexico’s strict gun purchase laws by obtaining firearms through straw purchasers, unlicensed resellers, theft, and specialised brokers from US commercial markets. In response, the Mexican government has taken steps to combat the flow of illegal weapons into the country.
