In November 1979, Iranian students seized the US embassy in Tehran and held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days. In 1981, Iran released the hostages as part of a deal to unfreeze Iranian assets. Decades later, the practice of hostage swapping continues to be a contentious issue in US-Iran relations.
