Excluded from a government review on prison overcrowding, morally questionable indefinite jail terms known as imprisonment for public protection (IPP) sentences have left thousands without release dates, despite calls for their reconsideration by campaigners and former top judges. Led by former justice secretary David Gauke, the review will not address the scandal of IPP sentences, as a further 1,100 prisoners are set to be released early under emergency measures. The exclusion overlooks cases such as James Lawrence, Thomas White, and Abdullahi Suleman, who remain imprisoned for minor offenses or lengthy periods under the controversial IPP system, which was scrapped in 2012 due to human rights concerns.
